For years, I was obsessed with songwriting. I listened to folks like Leonard Cohen and Elliott Smith and M. Ward and just wanted to make music like that. So I did. I had barebones equipment, only an iBook, often recording it through just the microphone on the screen. I did experiment a little bit, but it never went anywhere. Fortunately for me, all my musical heroes played neatly with low recording quality, too.

As I became a writer and journalist of some repute, I fell out of doing this. Soon after starting my first blog, I largely put the guitar away.

But the music I made with it deserves a home, so here it is. This is a document of my 20s, during the mid-late 2000s—a decade that, despite the somber tone presented in many of the songs here, treated me pretty well, all things considered.

I wrote about loss. I wrote about girls. I wrote about my neuroses. And it made me feel better that I got those things down.
